Can i paint stripes on textured walls

This post seriously saved my nursery!!! Thank you for solving that problem! It seals the tape to prevent leaks and works really well even if you need to apply multiple coats of paint before peeling off the tape.

So glad I found this! I love that you included both detailed descriptions and good quality pictures. Thanks for posting this! It worked great. When I was pregnant with my second and thought I had 5 more weeks to go , I painted stripes in that room too. I went into labor later that day and the tape stayed on for several days. Thank goodness my brother-in-law has steady hands because he spent a couple hours cleaning up the paint lines for us. Wanting to paint our bedroom gray and this looks like such a great color!

My life has been revolutionized. Thank you!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I wish I would have known these tricks when we moved into our house 3 years ago! We painted every surface, and stupidly I think every corner of the entire house has to cut into a different color of paint.

And for every one of those corners, I used a brush and a steady hand. Thanks for the tips! It helped so much because we did the room in three colors one on top, one on bottom, and one down the middle of the two. They are already white so that helps! My husband and I just finished painting our whole house and for the downstairs we did not know about the first tip that you mentioned, then I came across a link on Pinterest that showed how to do that and I did that for the upstairs rooms and will never go back to just taping again.

I almost want to go around and redo the edges of my walls downstairs but that will have to wait! Great tip! Please oh please share! Love this! Two questions — 1 does this work with a year old popcorn textured ceiling? I love it! Our painter painted the ceiling then after it was dry, taped it off and painted a non glossy polyurethane in the crack of the ceiling and the wall. It sealed the crack so that when you painted the wall the paint did not seep under the tape.

I also have read that painting mod podge in the crack of the tape also works. Use flat…not glossy mod podge. But since you already have the ceiling paint I would probably use that as well. Great tips!!!!

So helpful! Thanks for sharing! I did always wonder how to get those straight lines! Thanks for taking the time to share these great tips with us!! I am painting most of our house and just put 5 gallons of gray on the walls last week and still have the main floor to do! I am so glad you posted this!

My husband and I are in the process of remodeling out house and this will come in handy. I want to repaint my house now. Thank you! Great tips Ashley! Do you know if there are any tips out there for keeping the paint from running on fabric when using freezer paper stencils? Any ideas would be awesome! This information will not be used for any purpose other than enabling you to post a comment.

Your technique is awesome! Thank you for sharing it. Thank you for the step-by-step instructions on how to paint on textured walls. It was very time consuming but so rewarding in the end. Thank you so much for your guidance!

Thank you soooo much! Such a great idea!! First off.. I absolutely love this blog!!! I was looking for good tips on painting stripes on textured walls and there you were, lol. But I am having a big problem. Any tips, advice, comments, suggestions are all welcome. Thanks so much, Ang. Probably what has happened is that the tape is actually sealed underneath by the paint. You may have used too much paint, which is why they are wet and wavy, but it will hopefully be okay.

Paint just a little bit of stripe on one of the lines and peel the tape, just to see if it is okay. I love your walls!! You did such a great job, with your husband of course! Your seem like the perfect zags! Hi Brittany! We measured the wall across and then divided it so that we would have a complete V on both sides. Does that make sense? I am thrilled to have come across your website! We moved into our new house a year ago.

I love your chevron walls and I just painted my own on my master bedroom wall. I am also wanting to do the silver stripe. However, I started at the ceiling and measured down 1 inch. And at my point of my chevron, I measured down 1 inch. Then, I connected the 2 dots with painters tape. I hope all of that makes sense. So, how did you do the silver lines? You know what we did?

I think if I remember correctly took a ruler or something that was an inch wide and laid it underneath the bottom of a chevron. Then, we taped under that. Try that and see if it works. Hey Andrea! I think mine are about 6 inches wide.

I used this technique and it worked beautifully! Thank you sooo much for sharing this information. What measurements did you use? Thanks so much for this tutorial. I just tried stripes for the first time in the bathroom and it worked like a charm. Lots of pock marks. Would you suggest using something else other than paint to seal the rough texture before painting the secondary color? Is the cinder block raw or has it been previously painted? That might be a good solution for you. I share this tutorial on my blog about DIY chevron decorating ideas!!!

It worked amazingly well. So glad to know there are products and techniques out there now for these types of surfaces. So much better than me re-writing the whole thing! Thanks for the great tutorial.

I found this post admist my own painting project on a textured wall. My question is if I tape the walls and dab the paint, can it be left overnight? Will the tape fall off?

Also my project starts with painting lines, covering these lines with tape and then dabbing thanks to you! I think we ill have to do a few coats of the base color to cover the orange lines. You say to take off the tape before the paint dries, but what if we need multiple coats!

Hope that all makes sense! Sorry for the novel, thanks so much for this tutorial. This is an awesome tutorial! Thank you for sharing your expertise. You made me realize that it really is possible! I need to paint a hot pink wall with large white dots in another room. I will paint the wall white first, of course. Any ideas on how to get perfect dots with crisp edges on textured walls? Can you think of a self-adhesive material to cut the dots out of?

I thought about contact paper, but am worried that it will be too thick to press into the textured wall. Hi Maria! I think I would probably use a stencil for large dots.

I knew immediately when I found out I was having girl that I wanted to use coral in her room. My husband and I finally agreed on a small stripe separating coral above and a light aqua below. I had originally wanted to do stripes everywhere, but am so glad we went this route. This house has very textured walls and striping can be tricky.

Luckily I consulted the right paint expert at Home Depot and learned a nifty little trick to get crisp lines on these bumpy walls. For starters enlist the help of hubby and cousin to do most of the painting as I was 6 months pregnant and had a great excuse not to :.

I chose to add the stripe about 14 inches below the ceiling, using a level and pencil I drew a line around the room. I used a 2 inch tape for my stripe and left the original white paint in good condition underneath. I picked up a tube of paintable silicon caulk, as the Home Depot expert suggested, and smoothed a thin line of it across the edges of the tape. This is genius, Shannon!

Our walls aren't super textured like yours but touch ups are the worst! Thanks, lady! I've never had textured walls before, so this is all new to me! I used a Q-tip to touch up the paint in some places for these lines, haha! This is SO clever Shannon!! I would never have thought to do this. It's really only a few of our ceilings and above the picture rails that are textured now but it's just a great tip for future reference.

Love it!
