Those who refuse to go into the house of wisdom will have little use for the book of Proverbs. To them it will be nothing more than a collection of brief sayings that mean very little! To know wisdom one must know the God of all wisdom! The author of this book is described in the very first verse.
Who is the only man who fits this description? The word " Ecclesiastes " is taken from the word that is found in verse 1: preacher. So whenever you think of this big word, it should make you think of Solomon who calls himself the preacher. This means that Solomon was a preacher or a teacher, one who teaches an assembly.
What kind of a preacher was he? This book is filled with wisdom and truth from the Lord! Solomon wrote this book towards the end of his life. Solomon had to learn many lessons the hard way. He learned "how not to be happy. He learned the wonderful secret of what makes life meaningful. This is what the book is all about. Solomon was certainly qualified to write such a book.
As king, Solomon personally tasted power, riches, women and fame. These are the very things that most people think will lead them to true happiness. Solomon learned by his own experience that none of these things can ever satisfy the human heart or give real meaning to life.
Vanity means "that which is empty, that which is without value and meaning, that which never makes sense and never satisfies. All the activities of life eating, drinking, working, studying, living, dying, etc. Why is this so? What did the Preacher mean by this? Under the sun and under heaven there is much activity going on! You will find people eating and drinking and working and playing and living and dying. But none of these activities have meaning and satisfaction by themselves.
If a person goes "above the sun" and "above the heaven" he will find God! God is the only One who can give meaning and value to the things of life! Most people leave God out of their activities and these activities are all vanity meaningless and of no value. Solomon wants us to see life without God as it really is. Instead of burying our heads in the sand, Solomon wants us to lift up our heads and take an honest look at the vanity of life without God at its center.
Thus the book of Ecclesiastes shows the emptiness and disappointment of life when God is left out. Apart from Christ who is the Son of God and who is called the " SUN " in Malachi , man can never be satisfied no matter what he does or tries. Apart from God, life is meaningless. Think about it! A person is born, grows up and gets into a daily routine. He gets out of bed, dresses, eats, brushes his teeth, goes to school or work, comes home, eats, goes to sleep and does the same thing day after day, year after year.
Finally he drops dead and goes back to dust Ecclesiastes What profit is there? The word " profit " is another key word in this book. Is there any meaning to one's daily, monotonous routine? We know from a previous chapter in I Kings 3 that Solomon had prayed to God for wisdom. He prayed for an understanding heart to judge the people. He wanted to be able to discern between good and bad.
God was so pleased by the prayer that He gave Solomon what He asked for and more. He also promised Solomon even more if He lived up to the standards that He set. And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
Solomon wrote most of the Proverbs. His name appears at the beginning of three sections of Proverbs: Proverbs , Proverbs 10 ;1, and Proverbs , thus solidifying his authorship.
A few of the Proverbs came from other contributors. Anonymous writers contributed Proverbs Agur wrote chapter In this proverb, he highlights how little he knows. He admits that he does not know God. The first verse in this Proverbs states that. King Lemuel wrote Proverbs 31 according to the first verse. His name means for God. Some scholars believe that King Lemuel is King Solomon.
King Solomon was the son of King David and Bathsheba. He was the third king of Israel. He reigned for 40 years and lived to be about 60 years old. Another common structure is to show the positive and negative consequences of certain opposite choices many examples in Proverbs The book of Proverbs is useful for Christians because it charts the paths of wisdom that generally characterize a life worth living.
The principles contained in Proverbs are not a trite formula for success; we see in the books of Job and Ecclesiastes as well as in many other biblical stories that wise choices do not always equal freedom from negative circumstances--but it is a guidebook for a living a meaningful life which we can look back on with satisfaction in the end. Christians should acknowledge that both Old and New Testament are careful to note that wisdom cannot be attained by mere human study but must be given by God through relationship with him.
Proverbs are written in such a way that they cover a variety of topics rapid-fire, rather than focusing on only one thing at a time. This shows the wide-ranging need for wisdom, but it can also be helpful to distill down some overarching themes we see throughout the book so as to apply them in our lives.
To be wise, stand in awe of God. With this starting point, we stop talking and are ready to receive. A dream comes when there are many cares, and many words mark the speech of a fool Be careful to whom you listen. They often contain expert advice, with a role for educating the readers on what they may face if they do something. Hence, proverbs play a didactic role, as they play a universal role in teaching wisdom and sagacity to the common people. In Proverbs 4 a father delivers three messages to his sons.
The first is to pursue Wisdom and never let her go, the second is to avoid the wicked by taking the correct path, and the third is to stick to that path because it is a source of life. In other words, the proverb as a type of literature is not in the business of making a universal truth claim. Or, to put it more positively, a proverb is always true when applied to the right situation at the right time. Proverbs have many names: they can be called axioms, old saws, sayings and adages. The definition of a proverb is a short saying that is widely used to express an obvious truth.
