Talisker 10 year old, Tamdhu batch strength 5, Mortlach 21 year old, special releases , Best Peated: Ardbeg Uigeadail at Drizly.
The flavor of this Scotch comes from burning peat to dry out the barley and stop the malting process, which infuses the grain with smoke. Aged in second-fill ex-bourbon barrels, the year-old expression is well worth the splurge. Many scotch enthusiasts may discover that they're well into their journey of appreciation before they ever actually learn what the phrase "single malt" even means.
To be considered a single malt scotch , the whisky must be distilled from a mash bill of percent malted barley at one distillery and aged for a minimum of three years in wooden casks. There are more than distilleries in Scotland making single malt whisky—much of which is ultimately destined to be used as a component in blended whiskies, but some of which is bottled as an individual expression of the particular distillery's character.
With a style out there for everyone, here are the best single malt scotch whiskies available in a range of categories. Aberlour is often overlooked by whisky drinkers here in the US, but undeservedly so. This Speyside distillery has an excellent lineup, with the year-old landing right in the sweet spot of maturation between the 12 and 18, the other two age statement bottles in the range.
The whisky is matured in both bourbon and sherry casks for 16 years before being married together and bottled. This provides it with the best of both worlds—a rich, oaky structure with some sweet vanilla notes from the lengthy time in bourbon barrels, and ripe fruits and spices from the sherry casks.
Bruichladdich is known for releasing some intensely smoky whisky, a signature flavor profile of the Islay region of Scotland. This includes the Port Charlotte and annual Octomore releases, which at times reaches some of the highest levels of peat in any whisky out there.
But the core bottling is actually this lovely unpeated whisky. The Classic Laddie is a non-age statement single malt that is light and full of notes of citrus, sweet malted barley, vanilla and honey. Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur. For that relatively low price, the discerning drinker is rewarded with flavor-rich, syrupy notes of honey punctuated by bursts of vanilla and paired with a gentle spice undercurrent. One such whisky comes from Auchentoshan, a distillery located in the Lowlands just outside of Glasgow.
This triple-distilled whisky has an almost bourbon-like character, making it great to use in a Manhattan , Old Fashioned, Boulevardier, or any other whiskey cocktail you can think of. These whiskies are traditionally very light and grassy. The American Oak is matured in first-fill bourbon casks, giving it a vanilla fruity note.
The grassy notes remain but under a lemon curd light citrusy and cream layer. Though not as well-known an island as its neighbor Islay, the isle of Jura also boasts a history of scotch production—and its namesake distillery offers a delicious and approachable year-old expression. The smoke on this particular scotch is soft and intriguing for any first-time scotch drinker. Twelve years is the benchmark for many distilleries, most of which have an entry-level whisky aged for this amount of time.
There are so many to choose from, but one of the best comes from The GlenDronach. This distillery is located in the Highlands and focuses on sherry-cask matured whisky. The hook for me is its time in both Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, creating a complex, incredibly enjoyable whisky with a burst of flavor notes such as dark fruits, raisins, chocolate, butter, baking spice and orange peels. This particular bottling has enjoyed a very lengthy maturation of over two decades, the majority of which is spent in former Bourbon barrels, before a finish in rich dark rum casks.
The result is a rather remarkable whisky — featuring funky tropical fruit flavours typical of Caribbean rum casks, and an undertone of stone fruits, vanilla, intense oak and vivid maltiness.
Tried this combo of Caledonia and the Caribbean already? Drinkers can expect flavours of manuka honey, creamy oak, vanilla and toffee. In many ways, this is an archetypal Lowland single malt: light, gentle and refreshing.
Like most Glenfarclas whiskies, this drop has been aged in Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks. Oloroso is a medium-dry style of Sherry, with its barrels prized by whisky-makers for their ability to add flavours of dried fruit, nuts and spices to maturing single malts. Glenfarclas 17 Year Old serves up plentiful juicy ripe plums, dried fruits, jammy berries, vanilla and baking spices.
A terrific winter warmer, or a great option for capturing the feel of a Scottish Christmas! Had this Sherry cask spectacular before?
Old Pulteney is known for its strangely shaped, flat-topped stills, the result rumour has it of a distiller misjudging the height of the roof, and having to slice the top off his stills. Combined with worm tub condensers, this makes for a rather weighty style of single malt. Old Pulteney Huddart has been matured in casks that previously held heavily peated whisky. Had Huddart? Give it a review here. The distillery was saved from obscurity by David Prior, an Australian businessman who had made his fortune in the yoghurt industry.
Some people love the earthy, smoky rush that envelops them from nose to finish, while others think it tastes like an acrid tire fire. There are different levels of peat, of course. Laphroaig, from the Islay region of Scotland, falls around 45 ppm, which makes it a decidedly peat-forward whisky.
The Dalmore positions itself as a luxury brand, and the price of the whisky follows suit. These are very fine single malts, most of which are influenced by secondary cask finishes that other brands might use, but the results are inarguably unique and give the whisky a defined Dalmore flavor. The classic year-old is aged in bourbon barrels before being finished in year-old Oloroso sherry casks. The release, of which there are just bottles, was aged in bourbon barrels and then finished in year-old Tawny port pipes.
This is just the first in a series of year-old whiskies from The Dalmore, so stay tuned. The whisky that comes from them, as well as the other warehouses on site, is textured, layered, and stays with you for quite a while. The year-old expression spends its last three years maturing in Oloroso sherry casks, while the liquid in the year-old a standout bottle spends its life in both bourbon and sherry casks before being blended together.
Bowmore is also known for its Black Bowmore series of ultra-expensive aged whiskies, the most recent of which is called DB5 For something a bit more affordable, check out the new permanent addition to the lineup, Bowmore The first bottles of this annual whisky release were aged in sherry hogshead and bourbon barrels. The exceptional Double Cask lineup includes , , and year-old expressions that are matured in Oloroso sherry-seasoned casks of both American and European oak, for soft notes of chocolate and vanilla.
The Macallan is also famous for its incredibly expensive, extra-aged whisky, some of which approaches three-quarters of a century of maturation. More recently, the sixth and final entry in the Edition series was released, a dram inspired by the River Spey that runs by the distillery, with a bit of minerality not normally associated with The Macallan. No coloring is added to any of the whisky.
Another robust Islay whisky comes from Ardbeg, which at about 50 ppm is slightly peatier than Laphroaig. Ardbeg, the sister distillery to Glenmorangie, generally appeals to hardcore fans of the smoky stuff, and for many years was sort of a cult whisky. The whisky is predominantly aged in first- and second-fill bourbon barrels, with some liquid going into sherry butts and French oak as well. The year-old anchors the range, with hard-to-pronounce, Gaelic-inspired expressions to round it out—Uigeadail brings sherry cask whisky into the mix, with dried cherry and prune notes complementing the peat, while Corryvreckan ups the ABV to Ardbeg does not add coloring to its whisky.
A few years ago, The GlenDronach was acquired by Brown-Forman along with BenRiach and Glenglassaugh , increasing its profile in the competitive world of single malts.
