Their time together is often spent focusing on improvement in Jamal's writing, and in Forrester's quality of life. It is through these sessions that Jamal's greatest work is produced, and is brilliance is realized. With Forrester, through Jamal's friendship he eventually regains the life he once had. This is parallel to the theme that even when things are darkest, there is a light, all you have to do is look for it.
