When was reading rainbow cancelled

You know, the love of reading — [the show] encouraged kids to pick up a book and to read. But under the Bush administration, the No Child Left Behind education policy shifted the emphasis on teaching children how to read. Under these new guidelines, the Department of Education put its funding behind programming that was teaching children the basics of reading, with an emphasis on tools like phonics and spelling. I talked to LeVar Burton by phone about the Kickstarter controversy and whether Reading Rainbow can, and should, endure.

Tell me the origin story for this Kickstarter. Where is Reading Rainbow now, and where do you hope it can go? Our seed funding got us to where we are. It enabled us to hire a team, develop a product, and release the Reading Rainbow app two years ago. Kids are coming to the app are reading about , books a week. So in order to be effective, and that is our desire, we knew we wanted to expand our footprint toward universal access.

And the web and classrooms were the natural place to begin that march toward access. What hoops? What were their issues with your idea?

There were concerns on both sides. And what were they worried about? They were concerned about the relevancy of the brand: is Reading Rainbow still relevant? I said it. Were you confident about that? That people still remember and care about Reading Rainbow?

I get feedback every day of my life, in terms of the number of millennials who come up to me and GUSH about what an important part of their childhood Reading Rainbow played. It could have gone horribly wrong. Giving it that extra time. Overwhelmingly, we have over 75, backers. Do you want to comment on any of those negative reactions? I would LOVE to. What criticisms have you seen? Sounds like you can just take the lead on this one.

So number one, Reading Rainbow was not cancelled because it was not effective. Was looking for excellent writeup. The item the fact is used to be any amusement bank account the item. I try to take my granddaughters to the library when they are with me, and we read together also; but I do not have them often enough. It was nice having re-inforcement from programs such as Reading Rainbow.

All of my many years of students thoroughly enjoyed and learned so much from the show. I always felt it helped them academically. Levar Burton did such a fine job as well. If anyone reading this has any clout in regards to convincing the network to please, please, please keep this show going in its original format and bringing back Levar Burton to do the job right, many other educators and I would be deeply appreciative.

Please do this for the sake … Read more ». They fall in love with a show like Mr. When Ghostwriter went off the air my oldest son was very angry. They are businesses with service to the almighty bottom line. Those of us who are the consumers of their product can take a flying leap.

I love this show and I grew up with this show and I hope my kids will see it to. I love the books that was feature on the show. I also love the positive role model of Lavar Burton.

My kids notice any changes right away on their PBS station. I remember my oldest being upset when she tuned in to watch Mr Rogers Neighborhood and it was no longer on at that time, and the same thing with Between The Lions. I feel another problem PBS is having is they now have three channels to take care of after the digital switch.

They now are multicasting and need triple the support for their three channels. This economy is no help either.
