There should have been ZERO tolerance for many of these businesses and private homes violating the rules. Contract tracing and testing needs to continue and enforcement of the rules is paramount.
Should El Paso pursue a national memorial and museum honoring the victims and marking the lessons learned in the Aug. The County has done an excellent job in honoring the victims and preparing or building the memorial. I do not feel our City would be well served by having multiple sites. The Walmart memorial is fine for the business location but did not fully honor the victims and is not conducive for site visits by family and friends of the victims.
With more calls to improve policing in America, should El Paso make reforms with its police department? If so, what kinds of reforms do you support? I fully support our El Paso Police and would not vote to defund or reallocate funds.
Reforms in any organization is a positive thing and needs to be evaluated by both those within the leadership, and a civilian group that is truly able to give unbiased feedback on where those reforms should be. I personally would like to see strengthening of our background checks for our recruits and much more training in areas of mental health, homelessness and domestic violence at the academies and as continuing education for our police officers.
El Paso experienced one of its hottest summers on record in What, if any steps, should the region take in combatting climate change? We need to invest in alternative energy. We should incentivize more homes and even businesses to go solar. We should also invest in wind power.
If the Multipurpose Performing Arts and Entertainment Center came before City Council for a vote in , would you support continuing this project? Why, or why not? The vote to proceed with the arena was directed by the voters.
If the MPC were to come out of litigation, what would the vote be for? A court decision would be to allow for the continued plan of the arena or to halt any further demolition of the buildings. Not knowing what we are legally committed to by this and previous city councils, I can only say I would follow legal advice. Yes, I am a supporter of the Economic Development Agreements but I would really push for living wages and benefits.
If the company is getting our tax dollars, then I would expect they provide our workforce with higher paying wages and benefits. Do you think local health and city officials have responded to the coronavirus pandemic properly? The City was late in enacting restrictions, in developing a working plan. They waited for direction from the State and Federal levels and it was a very mortal mistake.
Little enforcement was done as they wanted to focus on educating instead of cracking down on the violations. Are you in favor of diverting some police department funding, reallocating it toward local social programs? Our support and emergency services have always been underfunded.
This is also true of our social programs. If the department leadership requested it, then I would support it, but these are areas that cannot be reduced, especially during these times.
