Since we wrote that, hundreds of Phoenix residents are now being driven around in Waymo cars—many without drivers! Wing became the first drone company to make commercial deliveries to consumers in the U. And Verily and Calico are doing important work, through a number of great partnerships with other healthcare companies. Those are just a few examples of technology companies that we have formed within Alphabet, in addition to investment subsidiaries GV and Capital G, which have supported hundreds more.
If it were a person, it would have started elementary school late last summer around August 19 , and today it would have just about finished the first grade. Today, in , if the company was a person, it would be a young adult of 21 and it would be time to leave the roost.
We are deeply committed to Google and Alphabet for the long term, and will remain actively involved as Board members, shareholders and co-founders. Sundar brings humility and a deep passion for technology to our users, partners and our employees every day. He shares our confidence in the value of the Alphabet structure, and the ability it provides us to tackle big challenges through technology.
There is no one that we have relied on more since Alphabet was founded, and no better person to lead Google and Alphabet into the future. We are deeply humbled to have seen a small research project develop into a source of knowledge and empowerment for billions—a bet we made as two Stanford students that led to a multitude of other technology bets.
We could not have imagined, back in when we moved our servers from a dorm room to a garage, the journey that would follow. When I was visiting Googlers in Tokyo a few weeks ago I talked about how Google has changed over the years. The largest of which, of course, is Google. This newer Google is a bit slimmed down, with the companies that are pretty far afield of our main internet products contained in Alphabet instead. What do we mean by far afield?
Good examples are our health efforts: Life Sciences that works on the glucose-sensing contact lens , and Calico focused on longevity. Alphabet is about businesses prospering through strong leaders and independence. In general, our model is to have a strong CEO who runs each business, with Sergey and me in service to them as needed. We will rigorously handle capital allocation and work to make sure each business is executing well.
In addition, with this new structure we plan to implement segment reporting for our Q4 results, where Google financials will be provided separately than those for the rest of Alphabet businesses as a whole.
This new structure will allow us to keep tremendous focus on the extraordinary opportunities we have inside of Google. A key part of this is Sundar Pichai. Google is helping to develop a website. We have many, many locations behind us, by the way. We cover this country and large parts of the world, by the way. Stores in virtually every location. Google has 1, engineers working on this right now.
What do they fundamentally do wrong? They usually miss the future. I try to focus on that: What is the future really going to be?
And how do we create it? And how do we power our organization to really focus on that and really drive it at a high rate? On using money as a motivation: "If we were motivated by money, we would have sold the company a long time ago and ended up on a beach. On being CEO: "My job as a leader is to make sure everybody in the company has great opportunities, and that they feel they're having a meaningful impact and are contributing to the good of society.
As a world, we're doing a better job of that. My goal is for Google to lead, not follow that. On deciding what to work on: "We want to build technology that everybody loves using, and that affects everyone. We want to create beautiful, intuitive services and technologies that are so incredibly useful that people use them twice a day. Like they use a toothbrush. There aren't that many things people use twice a day. On working with super-smart engineers: "Deep knowledge from your manager goes a long way toward motivating you.
And I have a pretty good capability for that. On Google's philosophy versus Apple's: "I used to have this debate with Steve Jobs, and he would always say, 'You guys are doing too much stuff.
