Apparently this is fairly traditional way of doing things at a Croatian wedding. One heck of an entrance, I'll give them that. For a few kuna you can walk along the city walls. Doubt they would have let you do that in King's Landing. In many shots of the city, the water below is replaced with computer-generated buildings, and the small keep on the right is replaced by the Red Keep. As you'll see, they play around with the locations of many buildings throughout the series. That "other" keep on the other side of "Blackwater Bay.
If you rewatch the show, you'll see this little stretch of corridor inside Lovrijenac multiple times. Another spot used a lot. The screenshot is from season 3, episode 1, but you'll see that area in other episodes. The famous " Power is Power " scene between Cersei and Littlefinger season 2, episode 1 was shot on the lower level you can see here.
Ahhh, the Purple Wedding. The King Joffrey scene we were waiting years to see. This area, adjacent to Lovrijenac, is a park with walking paths. You can barely recognize it in the episode, but it's one of the biggest, flat, outdoor spaces around Dubruvnik, so it's not surprising they picked it for that scene.
The Lovrijenac in the foreground, with Dubrunik behind. This is a stunning city, by the way. I highly recommend checking it out Way too crowded with cruise ship people. The view from Lovrijenac. The production team uses every cool area they can find. As you'll see in the next few images. Another area used in multiple scenes. This was another from season 3, episode 1, where Petyr Baelish offers to help Sansa escape. In the opener of the second season, King Joffrey orders all of Robert's bastards killed.
There are a few shots of the doors in the rock here. Not much done to the Lovrijenac, just a few CG towers. Fun fact! The walls of the Lovrijenac are thinner on this side than the side that faces the sea. In case it was captured by an enemy the defenders of the city could deny their enemy such a fortified beachhead. It's the highest point in the city. As you can see from the screenshot, "Blackwater Bay" is covered over, and Lovrijenac is the Red Keep.
However, if you're standing on the stairs in front of where the Sept "is," you're actually facing this way not towards the Keep as is seen in the show. Such lies! There's good reason the creators of "Game of Thrones" chose these locations for the show: it's easy to make the show look good when the locations themselves look so amazing. This one's from my Instagram. Geoffrey Morrison Dec. The world of Westeros We start our trip around Westeros in the far south: Dorne.
Water Gardens If all of Dorne is as lovely as southern Spain, sign me up. Princely vew Sadly, you can't access that balcony, where Doran Martell sat in his wheelchair. Imagine dragons From Dorne we head east, to Essos. Still no dragons I demanded a refund for lack of dragons. Take the last scenes of season seven's initial episode: Daenerys lands at Dragonstone—Dothraki warriors, Varys, and Tyrion in tow—after seasons spent across the Narrow Sea.
While the nearby San Juan de Gaztelugatxe stands in for the castle's winding entry stairs, it's Itzurun Beach in the Basque Country that serves as the dragon queen's entry point to Westeros. Season seven isn't the first time viewers see Arrowhead Mountain. The Children of the Forest create their first White Walker in its shadow in a flashback during season six. Offscreen, it's a magical place to watch the Northern Lights and the most photographed mountain in Iceland.
Added bonus: you won't have to keep an eye out for any zombie polar bears if you visit in real life. The production team built a platform to protect the central area of the ancient amphitheater that once housed 25, spectators. Now, it'll be known for hosting three Lannisters, two Targaryens, two Cleganes, two Greyjoys, two dragons, a few friends, a few foes, and a dead man walking.
Among the plains and rocky outcrops, Daenerys released her dragon against the Lannisters for the first time, leading to a jaw-dropping battle and a thrilling explainer on just how they recreated dragon fire on land. Another Spanish castle made an appearance in season seven, standing in for the Tyrell stronghold Highgarden.
It's not the first time the beach has featured in a pop-culture darling: Planet Eadu in Star Wars' Rogue One was set in the area, which sits near the southernmost point of Iceland, about two and a half hours from Reykjavik. No, this isn't another planet. The ,acre Bardenas Reales are the Spanish badlands, made up of clay, chalk and sandstone that's been molded by centuries of water and wind.
Parts of the steppe offer up a little vegetation, perfect for the Dothraki Sea, which is also filmed in Ireland Glens of Antrim for the more lush scenes in season six. However, Ellaria herself was captured and imprisoned in King's Landing after Euron Greyjoy attacked the fleet transporting her back to Dorne for the army, leaving an unidentified Martell to assume power in Dorne.
Dorne contains the only desert on the entire continent of Westeros, and due to its arid climate it has one of the smallest overall populations. It is the only part of Westeros where citrus fruits and spices grow.
Dornish wine is also highly prized throughout all of Westeros, and considered to be among the best imports available. Dorne is separated from the Stormlands by the Sea of Dorne and is surrounded by water on three sides.
However, the coast of Dorne is rocky and mostly consists of towering cliffs. The only notable port is at Sunspear, and even this is poor compared to Oldtown to the west or King's Landing to the north. For this reason, Sunspear lacks any major strength at sea and is not a notable center for trade. However, the Dornish traditionally have greater ties to Essos than many of the other parts of Westeros, with the Prince of Dorne enjoying friendly relations with several of the Free Cities.
According to legend, Dorne once formed part of a land bridge, called the "Arm of Dorne," that linked Westeros and the eastern continent of Essos. The First Men arrived in Westeros by crossing this land bridge some 12, years ago, and came into conflict with the non-human Children of the Forest that already inhabited the continent. To try to halt the advance of the First Men, the Children are said to have called upon powerful magics which shattered the Arm of Dorne, sinking large portions of it into the Narrow Sea.
All that remains of the Arm of Dorne in the present day is a string of islands called the Stepstones , which run between Westeros and Essos. The eastern peninsula of Dorne which terminates at the ocean is thus often called the Broken Arm of Dorne. The destruction of the Arm of Dorne, however, did not stop the advance of the First Men throughout Westeros.
Overland travel between the Dorne peninsula and the rest of Westeros is severely restricted due to the Red Mountains , a large mountain chain along Dorne's northern and western borders, which possess only a few passes such as the Boneway and the Prince's Pass.
The rough valleys of the Red Mountains have been the site of border squabbles between Dorne, the Reach , and the Stormlands , for the better part of the past thousand years.
The salient of territory possessed by the Stormlands in the Red Mountains, along Dorne's northern border, is thus called the Dornish Marches. Central Dorne, east of the Red Mountains and west of the hills where the Greenblood river system begins, is completely inhospitable.
Central Dorne is a true rolling-sands desert, with little plant life and almost completely uninhabited by people, save for the occasional oasis-castle. Dorne's population is congregated around the coasts, and the few major rivers such as the Greenblood. The valley of the Greenblood begins in the hills of eastern Dorne and continues east until it empties into the Narrow Sea.
Most of the population is concentrated in the river valleys of the east, and are so crowded that casual observers visiting Dorne don't realize how small its total population actually is not realizing that the towns they see in the valley of the Greenblood represent almost the entire population.
Even the eastern region of Dorne is arid, but irrigation in the river valleys makes it agriculturally productive. While overland travel through the desert is possible by caravan, it is very difficult for large armies to move across. No major roads comparable to the Kingsroad or Roseroad connect Sunspear in the east with the Boneway and Prince's Pass in the mountains of the west.
Dornish soldiers seem to be equipped with boiled leather tunics under studded yellow robes and carry distinctive spears. Their heads are covered with yellow wind scarfs, apparently to avoid sunburnt. Like the Reach and the Vale of Arryn , during the War of Five Kings the military strength of Dorne has been left largely unscathed, in part due to their isolation from the conflicts of the war, except the loss of a very few soldiers killed by Bronn in " Sons of the Harpy ".
By the end of Season 6 , the Dornishmen , under the command of Ellaria Sand , support House Targaryen in Daenerys's war for Westeros , but a large part of the Dornish army and its navy is destroyed during the Assault on the Targaryen fleet " Stormborn ". Afterwards, Dorne is no longer involved in the conflict between Daenerys and her allies and the Lannisters. It is unknown how much the Dornish troops number in the beginning of the series, and how many are left after the destruction of the Dornish fleet.
It lies along the large peninsula which makes up the southernmost part of the continent. It is bordered by the Sea of Dorne to the north, the islands known as the Stepstones to the east, the Summer Sea to the south, and the Red Mountains to the west and north-west.
The landscape consists largely of rocky mountains and parched deserts, with more fertile lands along the rivers and eastern coast. Dorne is ruled from the castle of Sunspear by House Martell. One thousand years ago, Dorne was a shifting patchwork of small Andal states, with no ruler strong enough to seize control of the entire region.
However, a people known as the Rhoynar had fled Essos after their homeland was overrun and destroyed by the expanding power of the Valyrian Freehold.
